In this edition, we welcome the fairer sex to the pubcast, when our four friends, Deb, Lisa, Kirsten and Tina provide their thoughts on selected brews. In addition we split them into two teams and test their beer knowledge with some questions from the game Beer Smarts (tm)
Deb provided a selection of local and not-so local beers that she had collected from her travels and from family, and Mark and Phil are lucky enough to be invited to sample them – free beer is always a good thing!
We taste Snow Belgian style wheat ale from Lake Effect Brewing, and Big Muddy’s Saluki Dunkeldog. Then our Style of the Week is Vienna Lager, and the sample is from Devil’s Backbone who are one of the commercial examples in the 2015 BJCP Guide. Finally, we head out to Natty Greene’s Brewing Company, in North Carolina, for their Southern Pale Ale.
But wait, there’s more…we have a bonus beer from another of our local Chicago breweries, and we pull out the Infinity IPA from Empirical Brewing.

Pubcast 177 – Copperpoint Brewing, Florida
Mark has returned from a trip to Florida, and returned bearing growlers and cans from 2 breweries, Copperpoint Brewing amd Due South Brewing Co.
First up, we have a classically brewed Belgian Wit called Copperpoint Witness.
Second, it’s the straight up Copperpoint Lager – nothing fancy again, just a classic brew.
And lastly from A10 Hop Hog, their red IPA.
Our final recommendation comes from another Boynton Beach brewery, Due South Brewing Co. This brew is their Category 3 IPA which is their flagship IPA.
Pubcast 176 – Micropub!
This week we feature an interview with a UK publican who runs a micropub, the Brooksteed Alehouse. This new trend features a small, converted store that is turned into a limited tap, limited capacity, real ale pub.
And as a bonus, we also have a tasting left over from when John Bitterman visited, where we try a Michigan brewery called Black Lotus, and their Gin Barrel Aged 00Saison.
Pubcast 175 – Special Edition – Metal Monkey
To celebrate the opening of yet another Chicago suburban brewery, we went down to the grand opening of Metal Monkey Brewing, in Romeoville.
There we spoke with the Simian Overlord himself, Dan Camp, and discovered some of the background to how they came into production mode. Joined by Brett Smith, the VP of BS, and later the third in the brewing trio, Jason Janes, Director of Hops, Malt & Awesomeness, this podcast provides a flavor for their first beer offerings and the excitement of opening day!
Phil (USBrit) is joined by Jon Harlson and Tom Ryan who pass comment on their premier beers. We’ll be back later to explore the brew crew’s style and philosophy in more detail, but for now enjoy this special edition of the pubcast!
